Teeth are resilient and resistant to many things but, in some cases, teeth need to be removed in the interests of your dental and overall health.

Why do I need to have an extraction?

A tooth may need to be removed due to a number of reasons such as an infection, decay or if it has been damaged before repair. There are other reasons such as impaction, orthodontics and fracture.

What is involved when having a tooth extracted?

During a simple extraction, following the administration of local anaesthesia your tooth is removed using dental forceps. If the affected tooth is visible above the gum line this is the usual method used.

However, in certain cases your dentist may need to surgically remove the tooth.

All extractions are performed under local anaesthetic, helping you to relax throughout.

Following removal of the tooth a piece of gauze is placed in order to encourage a clot to form.

Alternative Techniques

In some clinical situations preservation of the surrounding bone around a tooth is vital and therefore an atraumatic extraction technique may be advised. This is usually indicated if an implant is to be considered following tooth removal. The technique involves the use of specialised instruments to slowly loosen to tooth, ensuring minimal trauma is caused to the surrounding bone.

After Care

Your dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions to ensure the wound is kept healthy. Occasionally following an extraction stitches are required to enable healing of the soft tissues. If stitches are placed your dentist will inform you of this including any associated instructions.

You will be provided with verbal and written after care instructions. It is crucial to follow these instructions to reduce the risk of a postoperative instruction developing.

Your dentist might recommend over-the-counter painkillers for pain management in the days after the procedure. You will be able to resume your normal day-to-day activities very soon after the procedure.
