Mouth Cancer Screening

During your visits at Family Dental Care Centre, we will screen all our patients to ensure their mouths are healthy.

What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?

The most common symptoms of mouth cancer are:

• Persistent mouth sores that bleed
• Unexplained lumps in the mouth or neck
• Red or white lesions in the mouth
• Changes in speech
• Difficulty swallowing
• A numb sensation
• Discomfort in the mouth, neck, or ear

What is involved in a mouth cancer screening?

During a mouth cancer screening, your dentist will conduct visual and physical examinations, look ing for any signs or symptoms of mouth cancer.

They will check the tongue, lips, inside of the cheeks, roof, and floor of the mouth, the lining of the throat, the head, and the neck for anything unusual.

What happens if my dentist detects anything suspicious?

If your dentist finds anything suspicious, they will refer you to a specialist for further testing.

Sometimes a diagnosis cannot be achieved by physical examination and therefore referral may be considered for a second opinion. A lot of the time we may also choose to refer patients for non suspicious areas for further tests we would be unable to complete in practice.
