A filling is primarily used to restore a tooth that has been damaged through decay, though they can also be used to repair broken and cracked teeth. Your dentist will use the filling material to seal the tooth following the removal of bacteria within the tooth. They help to prevent developing decay or worsening of existing decay and also help to eliminate pain and sensitivity, subsequently reducing the risk of infection.
Usually, a local anaesthetic will be administered but this is not always required. Following this, your dentist will remove decay from the affected area and ensure the tooth is clean and the cavity is shaped correctly. Then a filling material is placed in the tooth, hardened, shaped and smoothed.
The type of filling material to be used will be discussed by your dentist with you – it may be an amalgam, composite resin or glass ionomer. The various options available in your particular clinical situation including the relevant risks and benefits and costs will be discussed by the dentist with you.
