Versatile and commonly used in dentistry, crowns have a number of different uses, from reinforcing weak teeth and treating discolouration, to covering a dental implant and protecting from fracture.

What is a crown?

Crowns can be described as ‘caps’, which can be made from metal (different types), ceramic or a combination of both. They are constructed at a dental laboratory to be specific to your tooth and fully cover your tooth above the gum line. They are an excellent treatment option to provide additional strength to your tooth and are commonly used in certain clinical indications. Moreover, they can improve the appearance of your tooth particularly if there is significant damage or concern regarding the shape or colour of your tooth.

Here, at Family Dental Care Centre, when we create ceramic crowns we ensure they match your smile and tooth shade. Ceramic mimics the texture and look of tooth enamel.

What can I expect on the day?

Following relevant tests and investigations usually two appointments are required for the construction of a crown. Your dentist will discuss the different types of crowns available with the different materials used and we take the time to ensure you are fully informed of all options available.

At the first visit, usually following the administration of local anaesthetic (if required) the tooth being crowned will be prepared. This involves re shaping the tooth following which an impression (mould) of the tooth being crowned is taken. An impression is also taken of the opposing teeth. The impressions are used by the dental lab in order to create your bespoke crown which is created to fit in with your smile.

A temporary crown is also constructed to protect the tooth which has been prepared.

At your second visit, your temporary crown is removed following which your tooth is cleaned. Your new bespoke crown is then cemented in place and any necessary minor adjustments are made.

What are the benefits of a crown?

  • Strengthen and protect weak or damaged teeth.
  • Restore the tooth’s ability to break down harder foods
  • Created with your smile in mind – they blend in with your tooth shade if a ceramic crown is selected

How long will my crown last?

Dental crowns can last for many years depending on the material you choose but it is dependent on a good oral health regime and regular dental check-ups and hygiene cleanings.
To prolong the life of your crown avoid damaging habits like fingernail biting, chewing ice and teeth grinding.
