Crown lengthening is a surgical treatment required if the tooth that requires the crown does not have enough exposed tooth tissue above the gum line to proceed with a crown.
The aim of this procedure is to expose more of the tooth tissue above your gum line. Your dentist will achieve this by altering the gum and bone level, allowing them to restore your tooth.
Placing a crown on a tooth with insufficient tooth tissue means the crown will not be secure and there is a greater risk of failure of the treatment.
Crown lengthening can also be used to correct gummy smiles.
Following the administration of local anaesthetic, your Dentist will surgically remove the relevant gum tissue around the tooth. The area will be adequately contoured and some of the gum tissue will be then removed. The procedure is then completed by placing some stitches in the area.
Your dentist will discuss specific post operative instructions with you and it is very important to follow these to promote healing.
