Versatile and commonly used in dentistry, crowns have a number of different uses, from reinforcing weak teeth and treating discolouration, to altering the shape of your teeth and protecting them from fracture.

What is a crown?

Crowns can be described as ‘caps’, which can be made from a variety of materials. With advances in materials, we are now able to offer patients high-strength metal-free ceramic crowns for both the front and back teeth. They are constructed at a dental laboratory to be specific to your tooth providing full coverage above the gum line. They are an excellent treatment option to provide additional strength to your tooth and are commonly used in certain clinical indications. Moreover, they can improve the appearance of your tooth particularly if there is significant damage or concern regarding the shape or colour of your tooth.

What treatment stages are involved?

Before we start any treatment we will first begin with planning your treatment. We will discuss what things you would like to have changed and we will discuss how this can be achieved. For multiple crowns, we may choose to take some moulds of your teeth and take some records of your bite. We will then ask our dental technicians to construct a model to show you can see what your new teeth could look like. You will then have the opportunity to look at these models and we may also transfer them into your mouth. Once your a completely happy we would move on to the next phase of the treatment.

The next stage would involve re-shaping your tooth and the placement of a provisional crown(s). This will give you the opportunity to trial the crown to ensure you are happy with the bite, shape and colour. If any adjustments are required, this can very easily be completed at this stage.

Once we are happy, we will remove the provisional crown and take a final impression of the teeth. This will be sent to our dental technicians who will construct the final crown in the colour you have chosen to the shape we have determined with our provisional crown. Following this appointment, we will fit another provisional crown.

On the final visit we will try the definitive crown to ensure you are happy with the fit and colour. We will then secure this in place with permanent cement. Once the crown(s) are fitted we will run through some brushing advice to ensure we achieve good long term results.

What are the benefits of a crown?

  • Strengthen and protect weak or damaged teeth
  • Restore the tooth’s ability to break down harder foods
  • Created with your smile in mind – they blend in with your tooth shade

How long will my crown last?

Dental crowns can last for many years depending on the material you choose but it is dependent on a good oral health regime and regular dental check-ups and hygiene cleanings. To prolong the life of your crown avoid damaging habits like fingernail biting, chewing ice and teeth grinding.

Here at Family Dental Care Centre, we aim to make our treatment options affordable to all by offering very competitive prices and 0% finance on this treatment option. For more information on crowns, please contact a member of our team.
